FAQs

For those of you who have one of those nagging questions they need answered before they book, we have compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions. Hopefully you will find your answer here. If not, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Q: Do we need sleeping bags?
A: No. The use of sleeping bags is not allowed at Hogwartz. All our beds are fully made up with fresh sheets and cozy duvets. If you need more than that, just ask our friendly reception staff.

Q: Do I need my own towel?
A: It is a good idea to have a towel with you, but you can also hire one of ours for a whole dollar.

Q: Do your rooms have ensuite bathrooms?
A: Some do; but you don't really want to miss out on our shared bathrooms anyway - they are awesome and all over the place (some even have rain showers and underfloor heating).

Q: Do you have "female only" rooms?
A: No, but we always try to keep one dorm/share room female only if we possibly can.

Q: Do you have parking?
A: Yes. To unload your luggage and check in, you may pull into the loading zone in our driveway.  Afterwards, there is free parking on surrounding streets, the closest ones being Bishops Road, Rattray Street and Elm Row. NB: Dunedin is a hilly city, so don't despair if some streets seem a bit steep, and please make sure you know NZ parking regulations (ask us if in doubt).

Q: We hear you are up a hill?
A: Yes, Dunedin has a few of those. If you have mobility issues, Hogwartz may not be the place to stay. But saying that, we have had guests in their 80s happily negotiating the steep hills as well as our front steps! Just take it slow if you need to. For those walking up with their roller cases, come up our driveway off Bishops Rd rather than the front steps!

Q: Do you supply breakfast?
A: No, but we provide two fully-equipped kitchens for your use. And a range of shopping facilities (24hr store and supermarkets) are only a short walk away.

Q: Where can we smoke?
A: Preferably at the next hostel. But if you must, please take an ash tray and USE IT(!) in our designated outdoor area.

Q: How do I find you?
A: Although slightly hidden by trees, we are dead opposite St. Joseph's Cathedral (a huge church!) where Smith St meets Rattray Street, about 100m uphill from the famous Speight's Brewery or approx. 500m from the Octagon.

Q: Do we need to book in advance?
A: Depending on the type of room you are after, we recommend you book at least 2 days in advance during the busy season (December to April). Other times you should be quite ok to ring us the day before or even the same day. As people's plans tend to change a lot, we take bookings no more than two months in advance.

Q: What time can we check in, and what is your check-out time?
A: To give our cleaning staff enough time to get your room and all the facilities ready each day, we have set check-in time to 2pm and check-out to a standard 10 am.

Q: What is the weather like down there?
A: Your guess is as good as ours, and even the forecasters often get it wrong. So, just go with the flow and take what you get - Dunedin is worth a look in any weather.

Q: We emailed you an hour ago, why haven't we heard back from you yet?
A: We do check our emails regularly, but we unfortunately don’t have a designated person who sits by the computer and waits for new emails. We will generally get back to you within 24hrs. If you have an urgent matter, please contact us the old-fashioned way (by phone 9am - 7pm).
