The Catholic bishop's residence since the 1870s, this beautiful old building has now been converted into a wonderfully complicated warren of comfortable rooms and 'projects', such as a mezzanine in the dining room and a bathroom in a corridor. The five-bed dorm, the bishop's old formal dining room, would almost certainly be the grandest dorm room you have ever stayed in. There's a short, steep walk up a winding path through lush bush from Rattray St.
This is one of the nicest hostels in New Zealand. It is set in a restored bishop's residence that has handsome woodwork, high ceilings, chandeliers and commanding views from many of the rooms. And it is all exceptionally clean and carefully maintained. There is a cosy TV lounge with an extensive DVD collection, a large modern fully-equipped kitchen, and a lovely dining area with a mezzanine and great log fire. While most hostels would cram ten or more bunk beds into its huge rooms, they have just five single beds with quality mattresses and duvets. Double and twin rooms are particularly good value. They have cheap laundry and internet access. It has a cheerful atmosphere, a central location and has extrememly friendly management and staff.
I have really enjoyed a
very magical stay here at Hogwartz! I loved the whole house, the homely
atmosphere, the room, the kitchen, the chill-out areas, the chess set and the
cabinet full of books, the herbs in the garden, the cleanliness, the staff and
the very unique magical timeless atmosphere. Thank you all for making our stay
so memorable. We will miss Dunedin and Hogwartz and will definitely be

We stayed here for 4 days
and saw 3 different rooms. Each one was a gem. This hostel has been the
absolute BEST one that I have ever stayed at in 6 years of travel. THE VERY
BEST! Have fun with the coming years.

This has been the cleanest,

This is already my 2nd visit
here and although I have to admit that the first time was because of its name,
this time I chose it because it is one of NZ's finest hostels with great clean
facilities and friendly staff. Thanks for everything!

The small touches which do
not go unnoticed create a fine ambiance here - the wooden floors and loft, the
wood fire in the evening, the plants, the dogs. I wouldn't have been happier in
a $300 hotel room. We had a million dollar view from our room. Thank you!

Very much enjoyed our stay at Hogwartz - the dorm spaciously accommodated its 5 guests and the facilities were consistently very clean. Would definitely stay there again.
This place somehow manages to combines cozy and pristine. With amazing views from the dorm room as a bonus!
I had a great stay at Hogwartz. Very clean, cozy rooms, friendly owners Maja and Gilbert and Jack Russell dogs. A place to feel home - and I loved the numerous different bathrooms :-) Thanks for all.

Grand, "grown-up" place. Helpful staff, comfy beds, character. Lovely, tidy bathrooms and kitchen, nooks to discover. A hotel feel with the friendliness of hostels. Maja was warm and helpful!

By far, most comfortable bed and pillow of all hostels been in, and this was dorm bed. Nice heating units in room. Great outdoor view of church with trees giving privacy from road. Fabulous DVD collection...

Beautiful historic building, the double bedroom was better than any hotel... other facilities (kitchen, lounge, dining room) were lovely as well. Good location and overall highly recommended. Owner's customer service was superb!
I loved this hostel and spent about two weeks there. It is just a short stroll away from the octagon and the Speight’s brewery (factory tour ...). Excellent facilities - ...and if it's really raining, you can find out, what Hogwartz is all about (Harry Potter DVDs...)
great hostel, we had a nice room with the best views of town. great, that they do not fill up rooms in off-season. clean and nicely made up facilities. honest advice for Otago peninsula, don't wanna just sell
no relation to the Potter boy but still magical. very good facilities, kind and helpful staff - there was a mix-up with our booking so they gave us a double room for the price of a dorm. clean and spacious, and they really do recycle everything!
What a find!, helpful staff and very comfortable rooms - nice city hostels are the most difficult to find but definitely stay here.
